As per the views of the developer Nihon Falcom, YS: Memories of Celceta can be considered to be the 4th canonical game of the franchise, following the release of YS IV: Mask of the sun and YS IV: the dawn of YS in the 1990s. In this game, an unusual character named Adol Christin takes the role of the protagonist. He suffers from amnesia. The game tracks the events that take place as he continues to explore the forests of Celceta along with his companions. 

What is YS: Memories of Celceta about? 

In this game, Adol Christin is a world-famous adventurer. He wakes up in barren land in the forests of Celceta, hardly able to remember anything other than his name. To find out about his origin and past, Adol is determined to explore the town where he found himself and look for any clues that can lead to the discovery of his identity. In his search, he is joined by a thief who claims to have spent some time with Adol in the past few weeks. The pair then goes ahead to explore the diverse, neverending forest of Celceta and map its vast expanses. This is a dangerous task as a lot of other adventurers dared to explore it but never came back home alive.  Determined to find out about his past life and the reason for his present state, Adol Christin sets off on an adventurous journey with his companion Duren. As he continued to travel and explore, he met numerous other people who too claimed to have seen him before. 

Gameplay

The gameplay of YS: Memories of Celceta is found to be similar to the other YS instalments. It’s an action-adventure game that features real-time combat elements.  There’s a standard attack button. Apart from that special moves called skills can be used by clicking on certain button combinations. All through the game, you would notice Duren accompanying Adol Christin in this adventure. The other companions join and leave at different times. Every member has unique attack styles that can be classified into three types: strike, slash and pierce. Different kinds of enemies are weak towards different kinds of attacks. Therefore, you have to know which attack style is effective. You can play with a maximum of three characters at one time. You can switch and choose other characters during the game. Every character has a powerful move called Extra move. This move can only be used when the player has optimum health. Players can choose to accessorise the playable characters as they like. The weapons can also be customised by reinforcing with different plants, minerals, and animal materials.  You can evade attacks before the enemy can successfully attack you. You can attempt to parry attacks too. If you are equipped sufficiently, you can also choose to defend yourself against enemy attacks. Flash guard means a successful parry that nullifies the damage caused by enemies. Also if you are successful in launching a parry attack, you can earn skill points. Flash move means a successful escape from an enemy attack before they could attack you finally. It makes you and your companions temporarily invincible. It also slows down the enemy. YS: Memories of Celceta allows players to use both the rear touchpad and touchscreen to make use of the useful features.
